How to Build a Winning Mahjong Hand
This lesson uses Mahjong Competition Rules (MCR) whenever a precise rule is needed. Other Chinese and regional tables may differ.
Context: MCRThe standard 14-tile shape is four melds and one pair; MCR also recognizes special structures such as Seven Pairs.
Core idea
Give every tile a job as a chow, pung, kong, or pair.
- Never mix suits inside a chow.
- Regroup overlapping suited sequences before rejecting a hand.
Use it at the table
Adjacent suited tiles are usually more flexible than isolated honors.
- Preserve the only pair until another candidate exists.
- A structure checker does not calculate MCR fan or the eight-point minimum.
Ruleset boundary
Structure, procedure, and scoring are separate checks. Use the official MCR text for competition decisions and confirm another tableβs rules before transferring advice.
